We Journey No More A Time Travel Adventure (Audible Audio Edition) Sahara Foley, Lynn Roberts Books Reviews
For a quick read it was only ok. I was actually surprised to find that I'd spent $.99 cents instead of $.00. The writing style/plot seemed aimed at a juvenile audience of 9-11 year old readers. Since it seemed to be aimed at this type of young reader, the gratituous inclusion of anal sex references/jokes was particularly jarring and out-of-place. (Similar to 3-D movies that must have things leaping out of the screen at the audience, even though the scene has nothing to do with the overall story.)
This is more of a novella or story rather than a book. Again, it could be considered a "book" IF the inappropriate sexual inclusions were removed and the book was for the target audience of pre-teens and younger teens.
SPOILER ALERT!
Overall it was an enjoyable incursion into the future, but there were so many unanswered questions and so little real character development that it was disappointing. The "heroes" had little to no remorse for their family, siblings, friends, loss of lifestyle. They didn't appear to figure out or even consider that if their world was destroyed in year 2041 that everyone and everything they knew and loved would be obliterated within their normal lifetime had they stayed. The question of the car horn and the posts was never answered. And, at the very end, why was the car found in the same place? It had a full tank of gas and they would have driven vs. walked. Why was the merchandise still in the car?
Highly enjoyable, fast read with plenty to keep your interest. Both main characters are well-developed with minds and hearts of their own. No weaklings whining here -- well, not once they get over the shock of their new circumstances! There is sexual content but it is in the context of a loving relationship. Strongly imagined and clearly described world-building is always a plus in books that take place in an alternative reality. I enjoyed this 'journey' very much and hope that Don and Janet 'Journey Some More' in another book.
The great thing about fantasy books is that you have to suspend your idea of reality to grasp the author’s intentions. In this case, Sahara Foley designed an entire parallel universe filled with original creatures and two wayward teenagers in a Dodge Dart. Since I typically enjoy stories that take characters on a journey, I was mesmerized from the beginning and glad I picked this book from all the thousands of books available to read on my . My favorite sentence came near the end but I don’t think that by sharing it I’d spoil anything “If the human race is going to survive, we have to stop fighting each other over stupid ideas that don’t mean anything and start working together.†Foley writes her dystopian Eden as a place for some sort of hope and renewal and though Jan and Don enjoy running around without their clothes on like modern versions of Adam and Eve, there’s still the problem of Dad, Mike, Mom and a bunch of Skittou. Not to mention the cops. If you like stories about make believe places filled with imaginary characters, you’ll like this adventure about running away from home.
I generally liked the book. It was similar to, and shared many characteristics of other Science Fiction time travel classics from “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court†by Mark Twain to “The Time Machine†by H. G. Wells. One concerns going back in time and the other takes the protagonist forward in time. Both explore the challenges had by a modern protagonist (or two) in a vastly different culture that is under stress, change and turmoil, as does “We Journey No Moreâ€.
Two bright but naïve teens find themselves transported 1000 years into a dystopian future. Their need to first get dressed, then to understand their society, the social mores and institutions and finally to discover a ominous threat to their society and to their very lives.
But to my taste there were many story arcs that were lightly skimmed over and I would have enjoyed a bit more depth. What is the back-story on the Donhume, are they just a boundary marker or is it more complicated than that? Do the Donhume tune into sexual energy. After all sex was involved when they entered the future and when they returned to their time. How did the magic words become so significant? Did each one have a different meaning?
I would have enjoyed more of this story. If I had my wishes I would hope the author would rework and expand the story. By the magic of Skittou, Feliza and Ganu I demand it, or I would if I could.
Not quite what I was expecting, but still a fantastic novel. There are a few different themes in this one, but one that stood out was the idea of hope and renewed life. I am very glad I decided to read it, not once but twice. It was a perfect escape from the trials of daily life facing me right now. I found it very easy to escape with Janet and Don as they explore the new world that has opened up to them. The story flows well and doesn't feel like it drags or is slow going. The pace is perfect for a young reader as well as an adult reader. There is a lot in here that any reader would be able to appreciate. It is an easy read and does make readers of all ages sit back and kind of think about how things are and the hope for something new. I know I will be passing this along to some of my friends to read as well.
We Journey No More A Time Travel Adventure by Sahara Foley is a fantasy book geared toward older teen readers. Don and his girlfriend Janet run away, traveling in Don's 76 Dodge Dart across the country. They just want to be together and seem to truly care about each other. They even call each other honey, which may or may not be an accurate use of language for teenagers these days. There is some good character development going on here, with plenty of adventures for Don and Janet. The plot was well developed with a lot of twists and turns to keep the reader on the edge of the seat.
Like a modern day Adam and Eve couple, Don and Janet explore their dystopian paradise as a source of hope and a new life. While a relatively short book, there is much to be seen here, it is filled with interesting characters and challenges. A recommended read for mature teens due to some sexual content.
